Case Study
Independent Television Station XYZ Challenge: Channel XYZ, plans to enhance their online presence by making a subset of their current programming content available online to view. To launch their online service XYZ wants to prepare 50 edited hours of programing for presentation within their new Flash player. Traditional Encoding Solution: Channel XYZ's IT department researches the commercial encoding software marketplace and decides that the On2 codec best meets their needs. After purchasing the On2 Flix annual software license for $3700, the IT department sets ups a powerful dedicated server from a third party provider to run the software at a monthly cost of $500. Approximately 1-2 man weeks is consumed with server setup, software installation an initial learning curve surrounding configuring and using the software. Once the server and software is stable Channel XYZ is faced with a new challenge, since they have a large (240 files totaling 2TB of video footage) content library to encode it is unrealistic to manually load each video individually to the encoding server. A piece of software needs to be written to build/manage a encoding queue which will automatically load their individual video files on to the encoding server, process them in order and notify the admin of any errors. After another week of testing and building the custom encoding queue it is now finally time to begin encoding the Channel XYZ encoding library. With a single server running their encoding software, Channel XYZ is now faced with a resource limitation as it is estimated that to encode 2TB of video content on a general purpose server will approximately take 96 hours or 4- 5 days. Total IT Man Weeks: 4Total encoding time: 96 hours Total server/software cost: $9700 New Encoding Solution with Encoding.com: Channel XYZ registers online for encoding.com account. Fastencoding's latest API Documentation is automatically sent to Channel XYZ IT department within minutes after signup and although they are able to encode video files immediately they spend 1-2 days to completely understanding and test the API. On the third day Channel XYZ writes a small scrip to show encoding.com where all of the source video content is stored (a specific directory on an FTP server) and where they want the finished files delivered (their CDN FTP account) as well as the specifications of their desired encoding project (H.264, Flash 9, 1500 kbps, 640x 240) After running this script encoding.com intelligent encoding queue recognizes the large product and distributes the 240 video files across 10 separate servers, all of the video files are encoded and delivered to the Channel XYZ's CDN network in approximately 9 hours. Encoding.Com charges for this encoding project by calculating only total "encoding bandwidth & which is calculated in the following way, size of source video sent to the system + size of encoded video sent out of the system = total encoding bandwidth. For Channel XYZ's project mentioned above the total calculation would be 2000GB (video in) + 900GB (video out) = 2900 GB of total encoding bandwidth at 41.00 per GB = $2900 one time encoding cost. Total IT Man Weeks: 1Total encoding time: 9 hours Total one time service cost: $2900
