The Encoding.com service works is as follows:

- Store your source videos on S3 / Rackspace or FTP site
- Decide your integration method, whether it be API or watch folder. Here, you must be the maestro and pick your encoding settings
- Deliver videos back to your S3 / Rackspace or FTP site.
- Encoding.com charges based on bandwidth I/O. So that would be source in + encodes out = total bandwidth used.

Vid.ly works very much in the same manner, except the following differences:

-  Store your source videos on S3 / Rackspace or FTP site
-  Use our API integration, as UI for Vid.ly has not been rolled out yet. With Vid.ly, we configure all the settings for you.
-  Receive the Vid.ly URL back. Watch it anywhere!
-  We do the hosting for you and charge based on # of Vid.ly URLs + storage + views.

Well, sounds like you're new to the platform, right?

Your objectives are to encode a video and deliver it someplace. smile

Here's where to start:

Beginner:

Most folks log into the UI @ http://www.encoding.com and select 'Add Media' from the list of choices on the left in order to test drive the system. Run through this a couple times, as adding media one a time is a great way to get started with the platform. Try adding a few tasks to your source media for multiple outputs.  Make sure to take a peek at the Encoding Queue, as you'll have to manually select files you add via 'Add Media' to process manually. Want to skip this step? Set up a watch folder and automagically content will be pulled from your source location and processed.

Intermediate:

Setting up a watch folder on Amazon S3, Rackspace or your local FTP site is easy. Log into the UI, select 'Watch Folder' from the list on the left and select 'Add New.' Configure the URLs to hit your source location, deliver to your preferred destination, add a notify, then add a few tasks to the folder. If you have any questions on configuring FTP, S3 or Rackspace URLs, then make sure to check out the following article: http://www.encoding.com/how_can_i_specify_where_my_source_media_is_located

Advanced:

Wanna jump in with both feet and utilize Encoding.com's powerful API to submit your content to our platform?

Find all the resources you need here:

When you begin using the Encoding.com Desktop Application or the API, you'll need to locate your API key to access the platform. A unique API key will be generated and assigned to your used ID upon successful creation of your Encoding.com user account. Please protect your key, as this key is a safeguard that we employ to restrict access to your user account. If for any reason, you suspect someone is using your account, you may regenerate your key. Directions follow below.

To locate your API key, login to the customer area @ http://www.encoding.com/login. Select 'My Account' from the list on the left. Within that page, you'll see a 33 digit key, containing both letters and numbers. Copy this locally, as well as your 4 digit user ID, as you'll need to plug this into the Desktop Application to get started. If you're a developer, you're all ready to start sending XMLs via API to Encoding.com. To regenerate your API key at any time, select 'Regenerate' and new unique key will be created for your account, which will end all previous access to the platform with the pre-existing key.

+ To add the user ID and key to the Desktop Application, please open the app, then and select 'Preferences' from the menu at the top. Plug in your user ID and your API key. That's it. You're ready to encode.

Let you specified the result video size as 320x0 - to make the width to be calculated based on the source aspect ratio. Then let you need to know what the exact frame size of result is.

First, you can find out the source media aspect ratio. Just send GetMediaInfo API request, and locate <display_aspect_ratio> property. If it is not present, just calculate the ratio from the frame size (<size> property) dividing width by height.
Let's now calculate result frame height. Divide the result width by the obtained ratio, round it to nearest integer, and then, if it is not even, add 1.
For example if source ratio is 1.333 (4:3).
320/1.333 = 240.06
So, the height will be 240.

For the source ratio 1.777 (16:9):
320/1.777 = 180.07
So, the height will be 180.

It can handle anything from low resolution video for dial-up Internet users to HDTV. The latest generation of WMV, based on the WMV 9 codec, has been standardized and approved as a new and more open codec known as VC-1. While all versions of WMV support variable bit rate, average bit rate, and constant bit rate, WMV 9 introduced several important features including native support for interlaced video, non-square pixels, and frame interpolation.

Within MPEG-4 standards are two very popular formats utilized for broadband video delivery: H.264 and MP4. VP6 is a proprietary video codec developed by On2 Technologies and is supported by Adobe Flash, Flash Video and JavaFX media files. It was widely adopted prior to the emergence of the H.264 codec, and is used primarily for Internet video and Flash video files. VP6 supports multi-pass encoding, constant or variable data rates, and advanced error recovery; and can be used to encode high resolution video, including 1920x1080 HD video streams.

Encoding.com: Scalable Online MPEG Transcoding Software

We offer our users a simple and scalable online MPEG transcoding solution. MPEG video generally refers to a set of standards and methods for compressing audio and video data. The most important and widely used standards include MPEG-2, an older format currently used by over-the-air digital television providers (digital cable, satellite) and MPEG-4, which includes additional features for digital rights management and support of higher-efficiency standards used by streaming media, HD DVD and Blu-Ray. MPEG-4 supports interactivity and has the ability to crunch massive video files into pieces small enough to send over mobile networks. Try one of our free plans today!

How long does it take to encode a video with Encoding.com?

We are often asked this question and there is no simple answer because the time required to encode a video file is directly related to the quality of the video file and your specific encoding settings. We are often asked this question and there is no simple answer because the time required to encode a video file is directly related to the quality of the video file and your specific encoding settings. A HD 1280x720 video file at a bitrate of 6000 kbps will take significantly longer than a 640x320 video file at a bitrate of 500kbps. That being said it is important to note that we have built our system to prioritize each video project submitted by a user to a new server so you can rest assured that your video files will never be in a queue behind other users waiting to encode. Encoding.com offers three different ways to encode your video. Chose the integration method that is most appropriate for your technical skills and needs. At a minimum you will need a video library hosted on a publicly available FTP / Rackspace or Amazon S3 storage account and a basic understanding of URL protocol.

Web Interface - Within our client interface we have tab called Media List. This tool will allow you to quickly and easily encode individual videos through your browser and it's a great way to test our system. Just follow the step by step instructions at the top of the Media List page.

Watch Folder - Also within our client interface, the Watch Folder allows you to specify an FTP / Rackspace or Amazon S3 directory for encoding.com to "watch" at any frequency for new videos. After each watch interval all new videos added to this folder will be processed using the encoding setting you selected. You can have as many watch folders as you like, making it possible to encode a large video library with little or no setup or integration work. Please see our collection of articles about the Watch Folder for more details.

XML API - Our most flexible and sophisticated integration method, the encoding.com XML API allows you to completely automate your encoding workflow and integrate our system seamlessly into your own video application using any common programming language. Custom file naming, multiple output formats and real time encoding status updates are just a few of the powerful features available via our API. Please see our API documentation for complete details.

What is “encoding bandwidth” and how do you calculate usage of Encoding.com?

Total encoding bandwith is the term for tracking user's usage of our encoding system. It is the sum of all of the source media sent into encoding.com and all of the encoded media sent out of encoding.com (video in + video out = total encoding bandwidth). For example, say a user would like to enocde a 1GB .mov video file into two files (e.g Flash 9 and our iPod preset). After the encoding process, the Flash file is compressed to 220 MB and the iPod file is compressed to 110MB. The total encoding bandwidth recorded in your account would be 1.33 GB (1GB + 220MB + 110MB = 1.330 GB).

In our service you need to tell us three pieces of information for our system to encode your video files: Where are your source video files? (This can be a FTP, SFTP, HTTP, or Amazon S3 bucket) How do you want your videos encoded? (Chose any of our presets options or customize your own) Where do you want your encoded videos sent? (This can be a FTP, SFTP, Amazon S3, or your CDN account)

A similar online destination is ideal to send your encoded video files. No further technical knowledge is necessary to use our web interface or watch folder feature.  Our Desktop Application and web GUI are also prepared to accept files stored locally from your computer, though we advise online storage to circumvent any connectivity issues, whether it be wifi or computer performance.  If you would like to integrate your website or application with our API, you will need a basic understanding of XML and a programming language to make XML requests (PHP, Ruby, Cold Fusion, VBScript, or C#).

Do I have to pay for video conversions that resulted in an error?

This depends on the type of error that has occurred.  If the error reported is during the upload process or because you are attempting to upload an unsupported format, there is no charge.  Otherwise, you will only be charged for the source video encoding bandwidth and not for the output files that have resulted in error.

With image conversion the file sizes are extremely small and not related to processing time so we charge a fixed rate per image to cover our compute costs for the conversions. If you convert any images in a given month you will see a line item on a usage invoice we generate on the first of every month.

Video Encoding - What is it?

Video encoding is the process of converting digital video files from one format to another.  All of the videos we watch on our computers, tablets, mobile phones and set-top boxes must go through an encoding process to convert the original “source” video to be viewable on these devices.  Why?  Because different devices and browsers support different video formats.  This process can also be called “transcoding” or “video conversion.”

Digital video can exist in many different formats with specific variables such as containers (.MOV, .FLV, .MP4, .OGG, .WMV, WebM), codecs (H264, VP6, ProRes) and bitrates (in megabits or kilobits per second).  Different devices and browsers have different specifications involving these variables, and others.  With Encoding.com, you have full control across many variables to convert videos from one format to another.

If you're interested in using Encoding.com's platform to convert video files from your source content, there's a number of ways to achieve that using the options listed below:

+ Use our web UI, located @ http://www.encoding.com/login, to create a Watch Folder and turn an entire folder of source content into your desired output. Watch Folders can exist on Amazon S3, Rackspace CloudFiles or your own FTP site.

+ Upload a single media file using our 'Add Media' feature in the web UI. Select 'Add Task' and utilize our presets for popular output formats to convert your source content.  As with Watch Folders, 'Add Media' can download video from Amazon S3, Rackspace CloudFiles, FTP sites or your local drive / network.

+ Implement our powerful API to submit source content and create output files in a snap.  Complete API documentation here.
