Complete HTML5 Video Support. The reality is that there is no single combination of video/audio codecs or containers that will work with all HTML5 browsers and we believe this will not change anytime soon. In order to prepare your video for playback across all the HTLM 5 video platforms and mobile devices we recommend encoding your video into more than one format. Although we have supported H.264 (the most popular HTML5 video format) for some time we have now completed our support for HTML5 Video by adding the for Ogg/Theora with a Vorbis Audio Codec as well as Google’s VP8/WEBM with the Vorbis Audio codec. Both of these formats are immediately available for use by selecting the WEBM or Ogg video presets in the Encoding.com Desktop Air Application, Web Interface, Watch Folder or via the API with the output format fields <output>webm</output> or <output>ogg</output> For webm we have taken it a step further and created 6 output presets based on Google’s recommendations for optimal output quality under different playback circumstances:
Preset 1 – 2-Pass Best Quality VBR Encoding
Preset 2 – 2-Pass Faster VBR Encoding
Preset 3 – 2-Pass VBR Encoding for Smooth Playback on Low-end Hardware
Preset 4 – 2-Pass CBR Encoding for Limited-bandwidth Streaming
Preset 5 – 2-Pass VBR Encoding for Noisy / Low-quality Input Source
Preset 6 – 1-Pass Good Quality VBR Encoding (default)
Ogg/Theora is the most widely supported HTML 5 video format and is found in the .ogv container with the Vorbis audio codec. Ogg is an open standard, and not governed by any known patents, which gives it distinct advantage over H.264. Ogg is supported with the HTML 5 <video> element in versions Firefox 3.5, Chrome 4, and Opera 10.5 support. Ogg is supported all major Linux distributions, as well as on OSC and Windows by installing the QuickTime(OSX) components or DirectShow(PC) filters. It is also supported by the VLC media player on all platforms.
WebM is a new container format released by Google in May 2010 and is based on On2′s VP8 advanced video codec with the Vorbis audio codec. WEBM is supported with the HTML 5 <video> element in versions of Chromium, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera. Adobe has also announced that a future version of Flash will support WebM video. It is also anticipated that Google will soon release support for WEBM on the Andorid OS.
Web Interface Update: Encoding Queue Previously is was difficult to spot jobs on the encoding queue page of the client interface if one job had a single output task fail. For example if you had a job with 10 output tasks and one thumbnail failed the entire job would display as finished in the encoding queue. We have now added a simple view that will highlight only the jobs that have failed with one more more sub output tasks failing.
Updates to iOS (iPhone/iPad) Adaptive Bitrate Streaming Fixed a problem in which BANDWIDTH reading in Apple’s Media Stream Validator for a segment was incorrect. Added support for AAC as audio codec used for the “Apple cellular fallback” audio only output stream. Fixed a bug that encoding will fail if source file has no audio stream.
MPEG2 Update Added the -f vob FFMPEg option as default to all MPEG2 output tasks.
MP4 RTP streams (Hinting) Option Now users can have the option to add RTP streams to their output MP4 files. This is a requirement for many H.264 streaming services including Akamai’s RTSP Streaming Service. Add<hint>yes</hint> to your MP4 output tasks to utilize this feature.
AVS Codes in Client Interface – Stopped storing customer AVS security codes in our billing system and client interface to comply with VISA and MASTERCARD compliance. This should make all of your privacy nuts sleep very well tonight
Aspect Ration Calculation Improved ability to calculate aspect ration in certain circumstances.
Watch Folder Optimization Improved the watch folder’s ability to interpret time stamps of fields on remote servers.
